13 Reasons Why, Season 2 – information for young people, parents and schools
You may be aware that 13 Reasons Why, Season 2 officially launched on Netflix on Friday May 18 at 5pm. Headspace has collaborated with Netflix to develop supporting resources and discussion guides for young people, parents and schools which will be made available upon the show’s launch (Friday May 18 at 5pm).
In the meantime, headspace has created a blog post on the headspace website, which is available now, and provides young people and parents with information to consider prior to the release of the show. The blog post includes:
- tips for discussing the show safely,
- points to consider before watching the show.
- questions to help start a conversation
You can access the blog post here:
http://www.headspace.org.au/news/the-launch-of-13-reasons-why-season-2
As the series has officially launched, people can be directed to 13reasonswhy.info where the resources will be available, including the information that can be found on the headspace blog.
Further to this, eheadspace will be holding group chat sessions for young people on Thursday May 24 from 7-8pm AEST and Sunday May 27 from 7-8pm AEST. You can access the group chat sessions here:
http://www.eheadspace.org.au/get-help/eheadspace-group-chat-session
Finally, we would like to inform you that a range of measures have been put in place with Netflix to assist with safely launching Season 2 of the series. This includes:
- A designated webpage 13reasonswhy.info where resources and help seeking information will be provided.
- Inclusion of warnings and help-seeking information before, and at the end, of each episode of the show. The end frame directs users back to 13reasonswhy.info
- On the webpage you will find:
Videos - One will feature the cast of the show (coming out of character) to address issues depicted in the show, and the other features Australian young people talking about the importance of reaching out to family and friends and seeking help on mental health issues.
Resources – Tailored discussion guides for young people, parents and schools
Help seeking information - Detailed help seeking information for young people.
It is important to note that 13 Reasons Why, Season 2 is rated MA15+ in Australia, therefore the resources have been developed for secondary schools, parents and secondary school aged young people. The resources are designed to promote help seeking and support having conversations with an individual young person and are not intended to be used for large groups or for classroom lessons.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards
Kristen Douglas

Literacy and Numeracy Development
Reading is an important lifelong skill and parents and carers play an important role in supporting their child’s reading development. To support the variety of reading activities that children engage in at school, parents and care givers can visit the ‘What works’ section of the Autism Hub and Reading Centre’s website.
https://ahrc.eq.edu.au/resources/what-works/reading
Additional resources can also be located on Literacy and Numeracy – parent resources. This Queensland Government webpage provides ideas on how to engage children in reading at home. Literacy and Numeracy – parent resources provides suitable ideas for supporting reading in all phases of learning.

Nomura Research Institute Robot Trial
The Nomura Research Institute Ltd, based in Tokyo, will be implementing an educational robotics trial in collaboration with the School of Distance Education, Charters Towers over the next 4 weeks.
Commencing on the 1st June, the project will trial the use of an educational robot to deliver remote educational services into schools and homes across northern and western Queensland. It is anticipated that the trial will run for a period of four weeks.
The two-wheeled robots can be controlled remotely using a smart device, allowing the user to move, see and interact with others who may be vast distances from each other.

Through the robot, students thousands of kilometres away could interact directly with teachers and external peers based in a classroom, or on the other side of the world, as though they were in that very classroom. It is a fascinating concept.
The project aims to provide an opportunity to combine a range of technologies into a single unique and engaging delivery platform.
The diversity of students serviced by the School of Distance Education make this an important step in overcoming the barriers imposed by distance.

Able to operate across low bandwidth internet connections and with an easy to use and intuitive interface, trials developed within the education framework support remote teaching and learning, however; it is anticipated that the robots will have far wider implications for a range of sectors including health and business.

The 2018 Japanese Speech Contest was held at Blackheath and Thornburgh College on the 18th May, 2018. We were very proud of the three CTSDE participants in the Contest. The students who travelled for several hours to participate were:
Maddison, Year 6
Sally, Year 5
Zarah, Year 5
Zarah gained second place in the Year 5 division of the contest. She received a medallion and a prize bag, as well as a Certificate. Sally and Maddison will receive Participation Certificates.
In the morning tea period, Norihiro Yamada and Gawai Cheng, two of the CTSDE Languages teachers, performed drumming (taiko) for a very enthusiastic crowd of students, parents and teachers.
This year, we held the local Japanese Speech Contest at the end of the Naplan Inreach to enable as many of our school’s students to participate as possible. Maddison has participated twice and in 2017, she gained second place. Language teachers would encourage students to participate. It is not just a chance to use Japanese language for a purpose, but a wonderful opportunity to hone public speaking skills and to meet with peers from other schools. Please make a note in your 2019 diaries for May, 2019’s Contest.
Congratulations to Maddie, Sally and Zarah who made us all very proud!

Cape River Outreach
What an action packed week! We started Cape River Outreach with a parade in our new shed and then headed off to class with our teachers. Prep spent the week exploring imaginative stories. While Year 1 had fun learning and creating 3D shapes. Year 2 zoomed off into space and Year 3 and 4 focused on sentences and paragraphs (with a few trips to Space with our Year 2s). Year 5 spent the week writing and rehearsing their own adaption of Little Red Riding Hood. Year 6 worked diligently, as usual, and even had time to design and perform their own dance! Our very hard working high school students had a great week meeting up with their fellow students and conversing with many of their teachers.
Wednesday afternoon we headed over to Towers Art to create some masterpieces. Have a look at some of our mosaics.

Thursday afternoon we climbed Towers Hill. Along the way, we stopped and explored the bunkers and took photos with our cameras. As the sun began to set, parents started to arrive, bringing with them our yummy spaghetti bolognaise dinner. Check out some of our photos taken at the hill. We have some talented students in our school!

We finished off our week with an exciting parade where we watched and performed in front of our parents and schoolmates.

Thanks for an amazing week everyone!

Cape River – Year 5
This week we have been rewriting a play from Little Red Riding Hood. Our play is called ‘Little Big Red Riding Hood’. We based our play on the Mothers perspective and our tone is comedy. We created two trees, an axe, a kitchen and Grandma’s bed for our props. We painted our tree trunk brown with black swirls, using cardboard donated by Mrs Currin. We then used bright green to paint paper plates for our leaves. We added cut up green crepe paper to the paper plates to create the effect of a willow tree. We wore costumes that suited our roles, all sourced from our homes or Miss Heath. We preformed it in front of the Cape River students and families. It was an enjoyable and hilarious play that brought the house down. Starring Keely as the Mother, Sally as the Narrator, Tom as the Woodchopper, Bridie as the Grandmother, Georgie as Little Red and William as the Wolf. Not to mention our other script writers, Skye, Stella and Clarrie.

We also spent time learning how to budget, with the year 5 students having an opportunity to develop a budget for a trip to Bali. We all loved the idea of a Villa with a plunge pool, as well as some fascinating activities. Our other maths activity was measurement. The year 5 students were able to discover their heights and the lengths of their steps. We discovered that Bridie was not too far from Miss Heath’s height. We had a lengthy discussion about the units of measurements for teaspoons. What do you think that a measuring teaspoon is in, millilitres or grams?
Overall, we had a great week with exciting activities. Our highlight was Towers Art. We created magic mosaics with the amazing staff at Towers Art aiding our creative juices.

Ewan Outreach
The three days at Ewan started with a bang!
Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 donned their astronaut suits and studied the Solar System. Did you know the International Space Station travels around the Earth 16 times a day at a speed of 25 358km an hour?

However, the highlight of the week would have to be the disco. The teachers were super impressed with the students groovy dance moves.
The teachers would like to thank Mrs Jones and all of the parents for taking great care of the students and the staff. The meals were delicious. We are excited to attend the Ewan Outreach next term and we are currently working on our talents for the talent show.

NAPLAN
Year 7s Navigate All Papers Like A Ninja (NAPLAN)
Week 5 saw four year 7 students come together to sit NAPLAN on site in Charters Towers. We also had another three students sitting NAPLAN at home this week. Being testing, we had a fairly quiet time together, but through playing 21 questions after everyone had finished early we found out that Owen would like to be a chicken nugget, Lana would be a drink bottle if she was an inanimate object for a day, and Miss Watherston would be Professor McGonagall. We also discovered that the year 7 boys were not up to date on the latest Prince Harry and Meghan Markell wedding conversations; an area that the year 7 girls shone in!
